Follow Up of the Day: Buddy and Pedro, the gay African penguins who made headlines earlier this week after it revealed that the Toronto Zoo intends to separate them so they can be matched with females for mating, will not be apart for long.
The zoo’s Curator of Invertebrates and Birds, Tom Mason, told PinkNews.co.uk that the split was necessary for the survival of the endangered species, but the pair-bonded penguins would be reunited as soon as the mating period is over.
According to Mason, Buddy and Pedro will only be separated if they do not show interest in mating with females.
“There will be a limited time of separation but it will not be permanent,” he said. “No matter what happens all the penguins will be re-united by spring.”
